ABS Repair
An ABS light usually means one wheel speed sensor has stopped reporting, not that the whole system has failed. We read the ABS module directly and test each sensor, its wiring and the tone ring it reads, before anything gets replaced.
Signs You Need ABS Repair
The anti-lock system watches all four wheels many times a second. When one signal goes missing or stops making sense, it switches itself off and turns the light on.
- ABS and traction control lights together: both systems rely on the same wheel speed sensors, so one fault often disables both.
- ABS light with the red brake light: on many cars that means brake force distribution is off as well. Have it checked before driving further.
- Pedal pulsing in a gentle stop on dry pavement: the ABS is activating when it should not, often from a damaged tone ring or a weak sensor signal.
- A light that comes and goes over bumps or after rain: usually wiring near the hub, where the harness flexes with the suspension.
- Speedometer or cruise control acting up: on many vehicles the road speed signal comes from the ABS sensors.
- The light appeared after hub, axle or brake work: a sensor knocked, a connector left loose or a wire caught during the job.
What We Do
A basic code reader often cannot see the ABS module at all. We read it directly, then watch the sensors on a drive to find the one that is lying.
- Read the ABS module. ABS codes usually name the wheel and the type of fault, whether the signal is missing, erratic or out of range. That narrows the search before anything comes apart.
- Compare all four wheel speeds. Live data from every sensor on a road test. The one that drops to zero, lags behind the others or flickers over bumps is where we look next.
- Test the sensor, wiring and ring. We check the sensor's signal, flex the harness to find breaks and inspect the tone ring for cracks or rust. A new sensor will not fix a cracked ring or a chafed wire.
- Clear it and confirm on a drive. Many systems only re-check themselves above a certain speed, so we drive it until the module has run its self-test. Where a hydraulic unit is replaced, it is bled with a scan tool and programmed if the vehicle requires it.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
With the ABS light alone, your normal brakes usually still work, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop and traction control is often off too. If the red brake warning light is on as well, have it checked before you drive further.
Is it usually the ABS module?
Far more often it is a wheel speed sensor, its wiring or the tone ring. Modules do fail, but we only condemn one after the sensors and wiring test good.
Will an ABS light fail my emissions test?
No. The Tarrant County emissions test reads the engine's emissions systems, and ABS is not part of it. It still affects how the car stops in an emergency, which is the better reason to fix it.
Why did the light come on right after new brakes?
Usually a sensor wire caught or stretched, a connector not fully seated, or a sensor disturbed when the hub or caliper came off. It is often a quick fix, but it needs finding rather than clearing.
