Signs You Need AC Repair
These are the signs worth acting on before the July heat arrives.
- Cool at speed, warm at a light: usually low refrigerant or a fan not pulling enough air at idle.
- Cooling lost over a season: refrigerant does not get used up, so it went somewhere.
- A musty smell on start-up: bacteria on a damp evaporator, often with a clogged cabin filter.
- Clicking or squealing on engagement: the compressor clutch or the belt driving it.
- Water in the passenger footwell: a blocked evaporator drain rather than a leak from outside.
What We Do
The check costs you nothing. What follows depends on what the pressures and vent temperature actually show.
- Free system check first. High and low side pressures, vent temperature and a visual inspection. That tells us whether you have a leak, a blend door fault or an electrical problem, which are three very different repairs.
- Find the leak. Refrigerant does not get used up. If it is low, it went somewhere, and adding more without finding out where is money you spend again next summer.
- Repair, then recharge. We fix the cause, pull a deep vacuum to remove moisture, then charge by weight to the manufacturer's specification rather than by gauge feel.
- Confirm at the vent. We verify vent temperature and cycling behavior before you collect the car.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
Is the A/C check really free?
Yes. Checking the system costs you nothing. Any repair we find is quoted separately and only goes ahead with your approval.
Why does my A/C only blow cold when I'm moving?
Usually low refrigerant or a cooling fan that isn't pulling enough air across the condenser at idle. Airflow at speed hides the problem.
Can I just have it topped up?
We would rather find the leak. A top-up on a leaking system vents refrigerant to atmosphere and puts you back where you started.
What's the musty smell?
Usually bacteria on a damp evaporator, often alongside a clogged cabin air filter. Both are straightforward to deal with.
