Transmission Repair

Slipping, harsh shifts or a delay when you select drive. We diagnose a transmission before we quote it. Most of what gets called a failed transmission is a solenoid, a sensor or fluid.

Signs You Need Transmission Repair

Bring these in early. The cause often turns out to be far smaller than a failed transmission.

  • A pause before the car moves: a second or more of delay when you select drive.
  • Shifts that thump or flare: harsh engagement, or the revs rising between gears.
  • Revs rising without acceleration: the classic description of slip.
  • A burnt smell or dark fluid: healthy fluid is red and does not smell burnt.
  • A warning light or limp mode: the module has logged something and limited the gears available.

What We Do

We diagnose before we quote, because a solenoid and a rebuild produce very similar complaints.

  • Scan and drive it. Transmission codes, adaptive learning values and live line pressure on a road test. The behavior and the data together point at the cause.
  • Check fluid condition and level. Checked the way the manufacturer specifies, which on many modern units means at a set temperature with a scan tool connected, not a dipstick.
  • Fix the smallest thing that works. Solenoids, sensors, wiring and valve body faults are common, and none of them needs a rebuild. We tell you whether yours is one of those.
  • Relearn and verify. Adaptive values are reset where appropriate and the car is driven again to confirm shift quality.

How We Quote It

We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.

If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.

Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.

Common Questions

Should I flush a high-mileage transmission?

Not always. If the fluid has never been changed and the unit is already slipping, a flush can make matters worse. We look at fluid condition and history before recommending it.

Is a slipping transmission always a rebuild?

No, and assuming so is expensive. Solenoid and valve body faults produce very similar symptoms and cost a fraction of a rebuild.

How much life is left in mine?

Nobody can promise that honestly. What we can do is tell you what the fluid, the codes and the road test show, and let you decide.
