Check Engine Light Diagnostics
A check engine light is where diagnosis starts. We read the codes, then test the parts they point at, because a code describes a symptom and only testing finds the cause.

Signs You Need Check Engine Light
The light means a module logged a fault. What it does not tell you is which part actually failed. That takes testing.
- A steady amber light: the fault is logged and worth looking at, but the car is not in danger this minute.
- A flashing light: an active misfire that will destroy the catalytic converter. Stop driving and call us.
- Rough idle or hesitation: often ignition or a vacuum leak rather than the part the code names.
- Fuel economy that has slipped: a lazy sensor can cost several miles per gallon before it sets a light.
- A light that clears itself: the fault is intermittent, not gone. It is still stored in memory.
What We Do
We work from the data, so the part you buy is the one that actually failed.
- Read every stored code. We read the transmission, ABS and body modules as well as the engine. They often hold codes that explain what the engine module is reporting.
- Look at live data. Fuel trims, sensor voltages and misfire counts under real conditions. A code for an oxygen sensor is very often a vacuum leak the sensor is correctly reporting.
- Test the suspect part. We confirm the failure before replacing anything. Replacing the part a code names is how people end up buying two of them.
- Verify the repair. We clear the code, run the readiness monitors and confirm it stays away before you collect the car.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
Can you just read the code for me?
Diagnosis is a paid service here. A parts-store code reader tells you which circuit reported a fault; finding out why takes testing on the vehicle, and that testing is what stops you buying parts you did not need.
My light went off on its own. Am I fine?
The fault is still stored in memory. Some faults only set a light after several consecutive trips, so a light that clears itself usually means the condition is intermittent rather than gone.
Will a check engine light fail my inspection?
Yes. An illuminated MIL is an automatic emissions failure in Texas, and clearing the code just before the test fails too because the readiness monitors reset.
What does a flashing light mean?
An active misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter. Stop driving and call us. Continuing turns a modest repair into a much larger one.
