Transmission Fluid Change
A transmission fluid change on a sensible schedule is one of the few things an owner can do that really helps an automatic last. The fluid cools the gears, lubricates them and does the hydraulic work of every shift, and it wears out slowly and quietly.
Signs You Need Transmission Fluid Change
A service is maintenance rather than a repair, so the right time for one is before anything feels wrong. These are the usual reasons people book it.
- Your maintenance schedule calls for it: intervals vary widely between vehicles, and many manuals list a shorter one for severe use.
- Towing, hauling or summer heat: many manuals class high temperatures and stop-and-go traffic like Highway 183 at rush hour as severe service.
- A used vehicle with no service history: knowing the fluid's condition gives you a baseline before anything goes wrong.
- A CVT: its fluid is specific to the design and its schedule is one of the easiest to overlook.
- A transfer case or manual transmission: each has its own fluid and its own interval, separate from the engine and often forgotten.
What We Do
We check the fluid's condition and the vehicle's history before draining anything, so the method suits the transmission in front of us.
- Confirm the specification. Transmission fluids are not interchangeable. We use the type your manufacturer specifies, because its friction properties are matched to the clutches inside that unit.
- Pan, filter and magnet. Where the transmission has a removable pan and serviceable filter, both are dealt with and the gasket renewed. We look at the magnet too: a fine gray paste is normal wear, metal flakes are not.
- Fill the way the maker intends. Many current units have no dipstick and are filled through a check plug with the fluid at a set temperature. Getting the level right matters as much as the fluid itself.
- Drive through every gear. A road test through the full range, including reverse, then a final look underneath for any seep at the pan, plugs or cooler lines.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
My transmission has lifetime fluid. Does it ever need changing?
Lifetime usually means the manufacturer does not schedule a change, not that the fluid never wears. Heat breaks it down over time, and some manufacturers' own severe-service schedules do call for a change. For a vehicle that tows or lives through Texas summers, a change on a long interval is reasonable. We can check yours and tell you whether it is due.
What is the difference between a drain and fill and an exchange?
A drain and fill replaces only part of the fluid, because much of it stays in the torque converter and cooler lines, so some vehicles need more than one to refresh it fully. An exchange replaces nearly all of it in one visit. We tell you which suits your transmission and why.
Will a service fix a transmission that is already slipping?
Usually not. A service maintains a healthy unit. If it is already slipping or shifting badly, it needs diagnosing first, and that is a different job.
Do manual transmissions need fluid changes?
Yes, on their own schedule and with their own fluid, which may be a gear oil or a specific manual transmission fluid. A notchy shift on cold mornings is sometimes just old fluid.
