Catalytic Converter
A P0420 code does not always mean the converter has failed. A sensor or a small exhaust leak can set the same code, and a converter that has failed usually had help from something upstream. We test both before quoting the most expensive part on the exhaust.
Signs You Need Catalytic Converter
In Tarrant County, gasoline vehicles 2 through 24 years old need a passing OBD-II emissions test every year, and a converter code means a failed test. These are the signs worth checking.
- A P0420 or P0430 code: the computer thinks converter efficiency is below its limit on one bank. Sometimes it is right.
- A sudden roar on the first start of the day: if the car was fine the night before, look underneath. Converter theft has been widely reported around DFW.
- A rattle from underneath at start-up or idle: the ceramic core inside the shell has broken apart.
- Power fading on hills and on-ramps: a clogged converter chokes the exhaust and the engine cannot breathe out.
- A rotten egg smell: sulfur, usually from the engine running rich. The converter is reacting to a problem upstream.
- A failed emissions test: a converter code turns on the check engine light, and a lit light is a fail.
What We Do
Converters rarely wear out on their own. If something killed this one, it will kill the next, so finding the cause is part of the job.
- Rule out the lookalikes. A lazy upstream sensor, a failing downstream sensor or an exhaust leak ahead of the rear sensor can all set the same code. We check each before condemning the converter.
- Compare the oxygen sensors. In front of a working converter the sensor switches constantly, while the one behind it stays fairly steady. When the rear sensor starts copying the front, the converter has lost its ability to store oxygen.
- Find what killed it. Misfires overheat a converter, and oil or coolant being burned coats it. A new converter on an engine with either problem fails again, so that gets fixed first.
- Fit it and let the monitors run. The replacement is one that is legal for your vehicle. The catalyst monitor then has to complete during normal driving before the car is ready to test, and we tell you what that takes.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
Will a converter code fail my emissions test?
Yes. In Tarrant County the yearly test reads the car's computer, and a lit check engine light is a fail. Clearing the code right before the test does not get around it, because the catalyst monitor will show as not ready.
Why did my converter fail?
Usually something upstream. Misfires, oil burning or a coolant leak into the cylinders are the common causes. Age alone kills fewer converters than people think.
Can I just replace the oxygen sensor?
If testing shows the sensor is the fault, yes, and that is a much smaller repair. If the converter really is the problem, a new sensor will only make the code come back.
What should I do if mine has been stolen?
Keep driving to a minimum. With the converter cut out, exhaust leaves the car underneath the middle instead of at the tailpipe, closer to the cabin. Bring it in and we will check the sensors and wiring as well, which are often damaged when the converter is cut out.
