Coolant Flush
Coolant does more than stop freezing. Its additives protect aluminum, seals and the water pump from corrosion, and those additives get used up with time. A flush replaces them before the inside of the system starts paying for it.
Signs You Need Coolant Flush
Coolant often looks fine long after it has stopped protecting the engine, so we go by its condition rather than its color. These are the reasons to have it checked.
- The interval in your manual has arrived: it ranges from a few years on older coolant types to ten years on some long-life formulas.
- Brown, rusty or cloudy coolant: corrosion inside the engine has already started.
- Sludge or flakes in the reservoir: scale, or two incompatible coolants that have reacted together.
- A habit of topping up with tap water: each top-up dilutes the protection, and hard water leaves mineral scale behind.
- A used vehicle with no records: if nobody knows when it was last done, a quick test answers the question.
What We Do
We test the coolant before recommending anything. If it is still doing its job, we tell you it can wait.
- Test what is in there. Test strips and a refractometer show freeze protection and how acidic the coolant has become. That tells us whether the additives are spent, which the color alone cannot.
- Match the chemistry. Coolants use different additive packages and your manufacturer specifies one. We fill with the type your engine calls for, not whatever is on the shelf.
- Flush rather than just drain. Opening the radiator drain removes only part of the coolant, because a good share stays in the block and heater core. A flush clears the rest, so the new coolant is not diluted by the old.
- Mix with clean water and bleed. We use premixed coolant or concentrate mixed with distilled water to the correct ratio, then bleed the air out and check the level once the engine has reached temperature.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
Is a coolant flush real maintenance or a sales item?
It is real when the coolant has been tested and is worn out, or your manufacturer's interval has come round. It is not real just because a counter suggested it. We test first and show you the reading.
Does coolant color tell me the type?
Only roughly. Different makers dye similar chemistry different colors, and the same color can hide different formulas. Topping up with whatever looks alike is a common mistake. Go by what the manufacturer specifies.
Does old coolant really damage the radiator?
Over time, yes. Once the corrosion inhibitors are used up the coolant stops protecting the metal, and aluminum radiators and heater cores corrode from the inside. It tends to surface years later as pinhole leaks or blocked tubes.
Coolant Flush
Old coolant turns acidic and eats the radiator from the inside.
