Radiator Repair
Radiators fail in a few predictable ways: a cracked plastic tank, tubes blocked with scale, or fins so packed with dirt that air cannot get through. We work out which one you have before anyone talks about a new radiator.
Signs You Need Radiator Repair
A tired radiator usually shows up as heat that creeps upward when the car is working hardest. These are the signs that point at the radiator itself rather than the rest of the system.
- Dried coolant crust along a tank seam: most modern radiators have plastic tanks crimped onto an aluminum core, and that joint is where they usually let go.
- Temperature rising on hot afternoons or with a load: a partly blocked core copes in mild weather and falls behind in a Texas summer or with a trailer behind.
- Fins bent flat or caked with bugs and dust: blocked airflow on the outside cuts cooling as surely as a blockage on the inside.
- A damp film on the face of the core: a pinhole that seeps and evaporates rather than leaving a puddle.
- Rusty or sludgy coolant in the reservoir: that debris settles in the radiator's narrow tubes and stays there.
What We Do
A radiator is easy to reach and easy to blame, which is why it often gets replaced when the fault is somewhere else. We confirm it first.
- Trace the wet spot. With the system under pressure we follow the coolant back to where it is escaping. A wet radiator is sometimes just catching drips from a hose or a pump mounted above it.
- Check flow across the core. Once the engine is warm we scan the core with an infrared thermometer. Cold bands across it mean blocked tubes, and topping up will never fix those.
- Look at the fan and shroud. A radiator only sheds heat with air moving through it. A missing shroud, a weak fan motor or a failed relay produces the same climbing gauge as a blocked core.
- Fit, reconnect and refill. If the radiator is at fault it is replaced with one matched to your vehicle. On many automatics the transmission cooler lives inside the radiator tank, so those lines are reconnected and the transmission fluid level checked as well.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
Can a radiator be repaired instead of replaced?
Occasionally, for a damaged fitting or hose neck on some designs. Modern radiators with plastic tanks and thin aluminum cores generally are not good candidates for repair, and we will tell you plainly which applies to yours.
Do stop-leak products work?
On a pinhole they can buy time to get home. They work by plugging small gaps, and they cannot choose which ones, so they can also narrow the heater core and radiator tubes. If one has been used, tell us, because it changes how we clean the system out.
Why would my transmission be involved?
On many automatic vehicles the transmission fluid cooler sits inside the radiator. If that internal cooler fails, coolant and transmission fluid can mix, which is hard on the transmission. Milky, pinkish fluid in either system is a reason to stop and have it checked.
Is it safe to drive with a leaking radiator?
A short distance with the gauge watched closely is often fine. If the needle climbs past normal, pull over and switch off. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine, because the coolant is under pressure and can scald.
