Car Heater Repair

Car heater blowing cold? The heater is a small radiator behind the dashboard, warmed by engine coolant. The cause is usually low coolant, a blocked heater core or a blend door that no longer moves, and we find out which before anything comes apart.

Signs You Need Car Heater Repair

North Texas winters are short, but a cold snap with no heat and a fogged windshield is a visibility problem as well as a comfort one. These are the signs.

  • Cold on one side, hot on the other: on dual-zone systems that usually means one blend door actuator has failed.
  • Clicking behind the dash: an actuator with stripped gears, endlessly trying to reach a position it cannot.
  • A sweet smell or greasy film on the inside of the windshield: a leaking heater core, often with damp carpet on the passenger side.
  • Heat that fades at a light and returns on the move: low coolant or an air pocket sitting at the heater core.
  • Only lukewarm air once the engine is fully warm: a core partly blocked with scale or old sealant.
  • Air only on the top fan speed: a failed blower motor resistor, which is a separate and common fault.

What We Do

Replacing a heater core means removing much of the dashboard on some vehicles, so we rule out every simpler cause first.

  • Read the heater hoses. With the coolant level confirmed, we measure the temperature of both heater hoses. Two hot hoses and cold air points at the doors; one hot and one cool points at the core.
  • Test the blend door. We command the actuator through its range with a scan tool where the vehicle supports it, measuring vent temperature at each position and listening for the gears slipping.
  • Try flushing the core. A partly blocked core can sometimes be back-flushed into working order. We tell you how likely that is on yours and whether the result is likely to last.
  • Explain the core job up front. If the core itself has failed, you hear how much of the dash comes out on your model and what that involves before you agree to anything.

How We Quote It

We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.

If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.

Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.

Common Questions

Is a leaking heater core a problem beyond comfort?

Yes. Coolant vapor fogs the windshield from the inside, which you cannot always clear, and the leak drains coolant the engine needs. It is worth fixing promptly.

Can the heater core be bypassed?

On many vehicles, as a short-term measure to stop a leaking core draining the engine. You lose heat and, more importantly, the ability to clear a fogged windshield, so it is a stopgap and not a repair.

Why does my heat only work while driving?

At idle the water pump moves less coolant, so a low level or a partly blocked core shows up first at a standstill. Low coolant is the usual cause, and that means finding where it went.

No heat in winter is usually the core, the blend door or coolant.
