Thermostat Replacement
A thermostat is a small valve that decides when coolant is allowed through to the radiator. If it sticks open the engine never warms up properly. If it sticks closed the engine cannot get rid of its heat, and that one is urgent.
Signs You Need Thermostat Replacement
Which way the thermostat sticks decides what you notice. These are the patterns that point at it.
- The gauge sitting low on the highway: stuck open, coolant flows to the radiator all the time and the engine runs cool.
- Weak heat on a cold morning: an engine that never reaches full temperature has little heat to give the cabin.
- Fuel economy that has slipped: an engine that believes it is cold keeps running a richer mixture.
- A slow warm-up code: many vehicles log a fault, P0128 is a common one, when the engine takes too long to reach temperature.
- Temperature spiking within minutes of starting: stuck closed, the coolant cannot reach the radiator at all. Pull over and switch off.
What We Do
We confirm the thermostat is at fault before replacing it, because the gauge on your dash is a sensor reading and sensors fail too.
- Compare the sensor with reality. We read the coolant temperature the engine computer reports and check it against a direct reading at the thermostat housing. A lying sensor and a stuck thermostat can look identical from the driver's seat.
- Watch it open. From a cold start we track the engine and upper hose temperatures. A healthy thermostat holds coolant back, then opens close to its rated temperature and the hose warms quickly.
- Fit the correct part. The replacement has to open at the temperature your manufacturer specifies. Many newer engines use a thermostat built into its housing, or an electronically controlled unit, and those are replaced as an assembly.
- Drive to full temperature. We clear any stored code and drive the car until the engine reaches and holds operating temperature, so we see the warm-up monitor complete rather than assuming it will.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
Can I just take the thermostat out?
No. Without one the engine runs too cool, wears faster, uses more fuel and, on most modern cars, sets a check engine light.
Is a thermostat stuck open dangerous?
Not immediately. It costs you fuel and heat, and on most cars it eventually turns on the check engine light, which fails the Tarrant County emissions test. Stuck closed is the one that cannot wait.
Why did my car run hot right after a new thermostat?
Usually trapped air, or a thermostat fitted the wrong way round. Many have a small air bleed that must sit at the top. An air pocket around the temperature sensor can also make the gauge read wrong in either direction.
Thermostat Replacement
Stuck open means no heat. Stuck closed means overheating.
