Cabin Air Filter Replacement

A cabin air filter replacement is often the fix for weak airflow from the vents, a musty smell, or windows that take forever to clear. On most modern cars the air you breathe inside passes through this filter first.

Signs You Need Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin filter sits in the air path for the heater and A/C, usually behind the glove box or under the cowl at the base of the windshield. These are the signs it is blocked.

  • Weak airflow on high: the blower is working hard but little air reaches the vents.
  • A stale smell when the fan starts: a damp, loaded filter holds odors and releases them into the cabin.
  • Windows slow to demist: restricted airflow means less dry air across the glass on a humid morning.
  • Dust settling on the dash soon after cleaning: a full, damaged or missing filter is letting it through.
  • A whistle from behind the dash on high fan: often air being forced through a filter that is close to fully blocked.

What We Do

Most cabin filters can be reached in a few minutes. The part worth doing properly is everything around the filter.

  • Confirm there is one. Some older models were built with a filter slot but left the factory without a filter in it. We check rather than assume either way.
  • Clear the housing and cowl. Leaves and seeds from the cowl tend to end up in the filter housing. We clean them out so the new filter does not start half blocked, and check the cowl drains are clear.
  • Fit it the right way round. Cabin filters are marked with an airflow arrow, and one fitted backwards does not filter as designed. It is a common mistake on a rushed swap.
  • Check every vent and mode. Each fan speed and each vent setting, so a weak vent caused by a blend or mode door is not mistaken for a filter problem.

How We Quote It

We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.

If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.

Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.

Common Questions

How often should the cabin filter be changed?

Follow the manufacturer's schedule, which is commonly about once a year or somewhere between 15,000 and 30,000 miles. Spring pollen and summer dust here can fill one sooner.

Will a new filter fix my weak A/C?

Only if the filter is what is restricting the air. If airflow is strong but the air coming out is not cold, the filter is not the problem and the refrigerant side needs checking.

Will a new filter get rid of the musty smell?

Sometimes. If the smell is coming from the filter, yes. If it comes from bacteria growing on the evaporator behind it, a new filter helps but the evaporator needs treating too, and we will tell you which it is.

Is a carbon cabin filter worth it?

If exhaust smell in traffic bothers you, an activated carbon filter absorbs some of the odor a plain filter lets through. For dust and airflow alone, a standard filter of the correct size does the job.
