Engine Air Filter Replacement
Engine air filter replacement when the filter actually needs it. Every breath your engine takes passes through it, and North Texas dust fills it faster than the odometer suggests, so we pull it and show it to you next to a new one.
Signs You Need Engine Air Filter Replacement
A blocked air filter rarely causes anything dramatic. These are the quieter signs.
- Flat acceleration: the engine cannot draw the air it needs at full throttle, so the power is missing when you merge.
- Debris packed into the pleats: leaves, insects and grit, visible the moment the airbox is opened.
- Dust on the clean side of the airbox: air is getting around the filter's seal instead of through the filter.
- Regular driving on unpaved roads or past construction: fine dust loads a filter far faster than highway miles do.
- Signs of a nest: rodents like a sheltered airbox, and a chewed filter lets debris into the intake.
What We Do
It is a small job. You see the filter that came out, and you decide.
- Open the box and look. We hold the old filter next to a new one. Light through the media is a rough guide; the dirt load and what is caught in the pleats tell you more.
- Check the seal and housing. A filter that does not seat evenly lets unfiltered air straight into the engine. We check the gasket, the clips and the housing for cracks or warping.
- Look past the filter. The intake duct after the filter is checked for splits. On engines with a mass airflow sensor, a crack there admits air the computer never measured, which often shows up as a lean code.
- Fit the right part. A filter that matches the original's dimensions and sealing edge. One that is a few millimeters short sits loosely and leaks around the edge.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
Will a new air filter improve my gas mileage?
On a modern fuel-injected engine, usually not by much. The computer measures the incoming air and meters fuel to match, so a dirty filter mostly costs you acceleration. On older carbureted engines the mileage effect was real, which is where the advice comes from.
How often should it be changed?
Follow the manufacturer's schedule, which commonly falls somewhere between 15,000 and 30,000 miles, and shorten it if you drive in dust. Having it looked at with each oil change is the simplest way to know.
Can I change it myself?
On most cars, yes. It is usually a few clips or screws. Make sure the lid closes evenly with nothing trapped in the seal, because a pinched seal undoes the whole point of the filter.
Are washable reusable filters a good idea?
They can work, but one that is over-oiled after cleaning can coat the mass airflow sensor and cause rough running or a check engine light. If you use one, follow its cleaning and oiling instructions exactly.
