Factory Scheduled Maintenance

The 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 mile services, done to your manufacturer's schedule for your engine and the way you actually drive. We explain each item on the list and tell you which ones your car has already had.

Signs You Need Factory Scheduled Maintenance

The schedule lives in your owner's manual, and it differs more between vehicles than most people expect. These are the usual signs a milestone has arrived or been missed.

  • The maintenance reminder is showing: many cars count miles and time, and some also track how the engine has been used.
  • A round number on the odometer: many schedules group their larger items at the 30,000 mile steps.
  • You bought the car used: with no records, it is worth establishing what has been done before assuming any of it has.
  • Mostly short trips and traffic: many owner's manuals class stop-and-go driving, heat and dust as severe service, with shorter intervals.
  • A timing belt engine nearing its interval: on many engines a belt that breaks lets the valves hit the pistons, and that is not a small repair.

What We Do

We work from your vehicle's own schedule rather than a generic menu, and we tell you when an item on it has already been done.

  • Start from the manufacturer's list. We look up the schedule for your exact engine and drivetrain, then ask how the car is driven, because that decides whether the normal or the severe schedule applies.
  • Check what is already done. Your records, old service stickers and the condition of the parts themselves. Replacing a filter that went in last spring is not maintenance.
  • Do the items, inspect the rest. Fluids, filters, plugs and belts as the schedule calls for them. While the car is on the lift, brakes, tires, hoses and suspension get looked over, and you hear what is fine as well as what is not.
  • Write it all down. Each item goes on the invoice with the mileage, the date and the specification of the parts and fluids used, so the history is on paper whenever you need to show it.

How We Quote It

We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.

If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.

Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.

Common Questions

Do I have to go to the dealer to keep my new-car warranty?

No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because an independent shop did the maintenance. What matters is that the work is done on schedule, with parts and fluids that meet the manufacturer's specification, and that records are kept. We record all of that on your invoice.

Is the 60,000 mile service the same on every car?

No. Some schedules put spark plugs or a timing belt there, others put them much later, and some cars barely change from one milestone to the next. That is why we work from your manual rather than a fixed package.

Should I follow the normal or the severe schedule?

Read how your manual defines severe service. Many list frequent short trips, stop-and-go traffic, towing, dusty roads and sustained high temperatures, which describes a lot of summer driving on 183 and I-820. We will tell you which one we think fits.

Can I spread the work over more than one visit?

Often, yes. We sort the items into due now, due soon, and fine to wait a visit. Most fluids and filters can move by a few weeks without harm. A timing belt past its interval is the exception.
