Fluid Services
Brake fluid, differential, transfer case and power steering: the fluids an oil change never touches. We change them when your manufacturer's schedule or a test says they are due.
Signs You Need Fluid Services
These fluids last a long time, which is why they get forgotten.
- A brake pedal that softens on long descents or hard stops: brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point.
- A whine from the axle: can be tired gear oil or a low level from a seal leak, worth checking before the gears themselves wear.
- Chatter or binding in tight turns on an AWD or 4x4: often worn-out differential or transfer case fluid, or a limited-slip missing its friction modifier.
- Groaning when you turn the wheel: low or old power steering fluid, on cars with a hydraulic system.
- Towing or heavy loads: a trailer in summer heat is the textbook case for the severe-service intervals on gear oil.
- No record of it ever being done: on a car well past its early service milestones, worth checking rather than assuming.
What We Do
We test or inspect first, and we tell you when a fluid is fine. Not every vehicle has every one of these systems.
- Test before changing. Brake fluid is tested for moisture or copper content. Gear oil and power steering fluid are checked for level, color, smell and debris. A fluid that tests fine stays in.
- Use the exact specification. Gear oil weight, limited-slip additive, and the transfer case fluid your manufacturer calls for, which on some units is not gear oil at all. The wrong fluid there can cause the very chatter it was meant to fix.
- Drain, fill or bleed properly. Brake fluid is pushed through each caliper in sequence so old fluid does not linger at the far corners. On axles we loosen the fill plug before the drain plug, so a car is never left empty with a fill plug that will not come out.
- Find where it went. A low level means fluid left somewhere. We check axle and pinion seals, transfer case seals and power steering hoses, so a top-up is not hiding a leak.
How We Quote It
We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.
If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.
Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.
Common Questions
Does my car even have power steering fluid?
Many newer cars use electric power steering and have none. If yours has a reservoir with a steering wheel symbol on the cap, it is hydraulic, and that fluid does age.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
Follow the manufacturer's schedule. Many call for it every two to three years regardless of mileage, because the fluid draws moisture from the air whether or not the car is driven.
Is a flush better than a drain and fill?
It depends on the system. Brake fluid is properly flushed through the lines. Differentials and most transfer cases are designed to be drained and refilled. We do what the system is built for.
My manual says the gear oil is lifetime fill. Is that right?
For normal driving it may be, but many manuals also list a severe-service interval for towing, heavy loads or heat. We check the condition and tell you whether yours is due, rather than assuming either way.
