Timing Belt Replacement

A timing belt gives almost no warning before it breaks, and on many engines a broken belt lets the pistons hit the valves. It is replaced on the manufacturer's schedule, and we check whether your engine has a belt at all before anyone talks about one.

Signs You Need Timing Belt Replacement

Most timing belts are replaced because of the calendar and the odometer, not because of a noise. These are the reasons worth acting on.

  • Mileage or age at the scheduled interval: the schedule is the main warning a belt gives you.
  • A used car with no records: if nobody can show the belt was done, plan as though it was not.
  • Oil seeping near the timing cover: oil softens the belt's rubber, and a leaking cam or crank seal is usually fixed in the same job.
  • A whine or chirp from the front of the engine: often a tensioner or idler pulley bearing starting to fail.
  • Coolant weeping behind the cover: on engines where the belt drives the water pump, a failing pump can take the belt with it.
  • Cranks but will not start, and the crank sounds unusually fast and even: the belt may already have gone. Stop cranking it and get it inspected.

What We Do

Most of this job is the labor to reach the belt, not the belt itself, so the parts that wear alongside it get looked at while it is open.

  • Confirm belt or chain. Many newer engines use a chain instead. We confirm which yours has, whether it is an interference engine, and what interval the manufacturer actually specifies.
  • Replace the wear parts together. The tensioner and idler pulleys wear at the same rate as the belt. Where the belt also drives the water pump, we explain why it is commonly replaced at the same time, and you decide.
  • Set timing to the marks. Cam and crank are locked with the specified tools where the engine calls for them, the belt is tensioned to specification, and every bolt is torqued to the published figure.
  • Turn it by hand first. Before the engine is started we turn it through two full crank revolutions by hand and confirm the marks line up again. That catches a belt set one tooth out before the engine is ever started.

How We Quote It

We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.

If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.

Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.

Common Questions

Does my car have a timing belt or a chain?

It depends on the engine, and some models changed partway through production. If your maintenance schedule lists a timing belt interval, you have one. If you are not sure, we can tell you.

When should the belt be replaced?

At your manufacturer's interval, which is commonly somewhere between 60,000 and 105,000 miles. Many also give a time limit, because rubber ages even on a car that is not driven much.

What happens if it breaks?

The engine stops immediately. On a non-interference engine that is usually the end of it once a new belt is fitted. On an interference engine the valves can hit the pistons, which means cylinder head work or worse.

Do timing chains last forever?

Most are designed to last the life of the engine, but they can stretch, especially where oil changes were skipped. A rattle on cold start or cam timing codes are the usual signs.

Timing Belt Replacement

Replaced on schedule. A snapped belt can destroy the engine.
