Alternator Repair

Lights that dim at idle, a battery light that comes on and stays on, or a battery that keeps going flat. We test the whole charging system first, because a belt, a cable or a bad ground can look exactly like a failed alternator.

Signs You Need Alternator Repair

Once the engine is running, the alternator powers everything and recharges the battery. When it struggles, the electrical system shows it before anything else.

  • The battery light on while driving: despite the symbol, it usually points at the charging system rather than the battery.
  • Lights dimming or flickering: most noticeable at idle with the A/C and headlights on, when demand is highest.
  • A whine or growl that rises with engine speed: often a worn bearing inside the alternator.
  • A battery that keeps going flat: a weak alternator can leave it undercharged after every trip.
  • A burning rubber or hot electrical smell: a slipping belt or an overheating alternator. Pull over safely and have it checked.
  • Electrical oddities: gauges flickering, slow windows or warning lights that come and go as the voltage sags.

What We Do

An alternator is often blamed for faults elsewhere in the charging circuit, so we test the system as a whole before naming a part.

  • Test the battery first. A failing battery can make a good alternator look weak, and the reverse. We test the battery under load before deciding which one is at fault.
  • Measure output under load. Voltage and current with the lights, blower and rear defroster on. Many modern cars vary charging voltage on purpose, so we read what the engine computer is commanding before calling a low reading a fault.
  • Check ripple, belt and cables. A failed diode lets AC ripple into the system, which can drain the battery and upset modules. We also check the belt, the tensioner, and voltage drop across the main output cable and the grounds.
  • Replace and retest. If the alternator is the cause, the replacement matches the original's output rating, and the system is tested again with the engine hot and the electrical load on.

How We Quote It

We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.

If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.

Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.

Common Questions

Is it the battery or the alternator?

If the car starts on a jump and then dies again while running, the alternator is the likely suspect. If it runs fine but will not start the next morning, look first at the battery or a parasitic drain. A test settles it either way.

Can I keep driving with the battery light on?

Not far. The car is running on what is left in the battery, and when that runs out the engine and lights can stop. If the belt has broken, on many engines it also drives the water pump, so watch the temperature gauge too.

Does summer heat affect alternators?

Heat works against any electrical component. Summer stop-and-go traffic is a hard combination: high under-hood temperatures, low engine speed, and the A/C fan and blower running flat out.

New or remanufactured?

Both are available for most vehicles, and a quality remanufactured unit is a reasonable choice. We tell you what is available for your car and let you decide.
