Starter Repair

You turn the key and get one click, or nothing at all. The starter is only one suspect, so we test the battery, the cables and the start circuit before replacing anything.

Signs You Need Starter Repair

Several different faults sound almost the same from the driver's seat. These are the patterns that help tell them apart.

  • A single loud click: the solenoid engaged but the motor did not turn. Often the starter, sometimes a corroded cable.
  • Rapid clicking: almost always a low battery or a poor connection rather than the starter itself.
  • Grinding as the engine turns over: the starter gear is not meshing cleanly with the flywheel, which can damage the teeth on both.
  • Starts some days, not others: worn contacts inside the solenoid, or a fault in the signal that tells it to engage.
  • Trouble only when the engine is hot: heat soak can push a tired starter over the edge, a familiar pattern after a long summer drive.
  • No click and no crank: often the park or neutral switch, a clutch switch, a relay or the immobilizer rather than the starter.

What We Do

Plenty of starters get replaced when the real fault was a ground strap. We measure first.

  • Confirm the battery. A starter needs a strong battery to turn the engine over. We load test it first, because a weak battery produces clicks that mimic a failed starter.
  • Voltage drop while cranking. We measure the loss across the positive cable and the engine ground as it cranks. A corroded terminal or loose ground steals the current the starter needs.
  • Check the start signal. The relay, the park or neutral switch, the clutch switch and the immobilizer all have to agree before the starter gets power. A scan tool and a meter show which one is saying no.
  • Inspect the flywheel teeth. If the starter is at fault, we check the ring gear on the flywheel or flexplate before fitting the new one, so damaged teeth do not chew up the replacement.

How We Quote It

We inspect before quoting, because recommending parts from a description is how people end up paying for the wrong ones. Once we know what your vehicle needs, you get a written estimate covering parts and labor.

If we find something extra mid-job, we stop and call you with the measurement and the cost. Nothing gets done without your approval.

Every repair carries a 1, 2 or 3 year warranty, capped at 12,000, 24,000 or 36,000 miles respectively, whichever comes first. Ask us which one covers your repair; it is printed on the invoice either way.

Common Questions

Tapping the starter makes it work. Is that a fix?

No. A knock moves worn contacts or brushes back into touch for another start or two. It tells you the starter is near the end of its life, and it will pick its own moment to stop.

Could it just be the battery?

Quite often. Rapid clicking, a slow crank and dash lights that dim while cranking all point at the battery or its connections. One solid click with the lights staying bright points more at the starter.

The starter keeps whirring after the engine starts. Is that serious?

Yes. A starter that stays engaged is spun far faster than it was built for and can damage itself and the flywheel quickly. Switch the engine off and have it looked at before driving again.

Are stop-start cars different?

Yes. They use a heavier-duty starter, or a different starting arrangement, built for many more starts, and they need the correct battery type. A replacement has to match that specification.
